Space is always at a premium in healthcare environments. This was definitely the case when putting together the design for a renovation to the existing Urology Suite at the Health Sciences Centre. Potentially dangerous sterilization chemicals adjacent to work and examination space required innovative custom millwork coordinated with mechanical ventilation systems to allow staff to work safely and productively alongside the patient. New and existing diagnostic and investigative pieces of equipment were integrated and coordinated within this small space, affording improved ergonomics for staff, improved comfort for patients and an elevated standard of clean-ability for the maintenance and housekeeping department. All three groups are equally important to accommodate in a successful healthcare environment.
