Designing spaces to be used by children is particularly rewarding. Possessing an understanding of what will capture their imagination, what will calm then in a stressful situation and what the key components are to keep them engaged with their environment are all at the forefront of the design. This clinic is a collaboration of four physicians, each with their own style and vision of what the ideal clinic should look like and how it should function. Our design fused their many ideas and program requirements while maintaining a playful and engaging aesthetic, gender neutral and appropriate for all ages. Spectacular views of the surrounding neighborhood were featured in the gathering spaces as well as the examination rooms themselves. Patient circulation and procession through the clinic was of particular importance. A racetrack planning model allowed smooth and deliberate movement of patients in and out of the treatment areas affording privacy and dignity while offering each child and those accompanying them the opportunity to openly explore through the clinic and discover its many details.
